IB MYP Assessments

School’s assessment, recording and reporting policies/strategies

The Eagle Rock High School IB MYPassessment policy is built on the IB belief that assessment aims to:

  • support and encourage student learning by providing feedback on the learning process
  • inform, enhance and improve the teaching process
  • promote positive student attitudes towards learning
  • promote a deep understanding of subject content by supporting students in their inquiries set in real- world contexts using the areas of interaction
  • promote the development of higher-order cognitive skills by providing rigorous final objectives that value these skills
  • reflect the international-mindedness of the programme by allowing for assessments to be set in a variety of cultural and linguistic contexts
  • support the holistic nature of the programme by including in its model principles that take account of the development of the whole student.

Plans for Assessment

To ensure that the ERHS school community has a clear understanding of the IB assessment criteria, we plan to

  • Assess each criterion for each subject twice during the course.
  • Distribute assessment logs to students via Study/Tech classes at the beginning of each semester.
  • Maintain an MYP assessment log for each student in each subject, which includes:
  • task descriptions
  • the criteria or rubric for each subject
  • student reflection
  • Assessment log will be monitored through the Study/Tech classes via student e-portfolios
  • Submit copies of unit planner assessments to the MYP coordinator at the beginning of each semester.
  • Create adapted rubrics for MYP years 2-4 as necessary.
  • Collaborate on MYP Unit Planner assessments and use common IB assessment criteria.
  • Follow District processes for measuring students’ progress toward achieving the California State K-12 Content Standards and tracking progress as follows:
  • Periodic assessments: Evaluate students’ skill levels and progress in the core  subjects and monitor student learning progress. Performance data reports from the assessments give teachers a comprehensive and consistent way to identify areas of student strength and weakness, and help teachers inform future instruction.
  • California Standards Test  (CST): Measures students' progress toward achieving California's state-adopted academic content standards by grade and subject tested.
  • CELDT (California English Language Development Test): English Learners take this annual exam to ascertain English language mastery.
  • California Fitness Test: Administered in grade 9.

Plan for Communication

  • Post assessment criteria on the ERHS webpage (spring 2010).
  • Provide subject area rubrics on annual teacher course syllabi and on individual teacher web pages (beginning fall 2011).
  • Require students to complete a reflection after each MYP assessment task (beginning fall 2011).
  • Incorporate students’ IB progress into fall and spring student-led conferences. (beginning fall 2012).
  • Include IB unit assessment grades in end of semester (20-week) cumulative grades      (beginning fall 2012).
  • Offer MYP assessment presentations for parents during IB Parent Steering Committee meetings (beginning spring 2011), as well as at the fall 2011 Back-to-School event.
