AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
What is AVID and its mission?
AVID is a program that identifies underserved students in grades 7 – 12 and prepares them for a four year college entry. Avid is for all students but it targets those in the academic middle. The AVID class operates as an elective in the student’s daily schedule which emphasizes writing skills and cultivates critical inquiry. AVID provides intensive student support, including study skills, college student mentors/tutors , test preparation, college information, family involvement and motivational activities. AVID is a suport system for underachieving students, most of whom will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID program is funded by the school district as well as state and local education contracts. AVID’s systematic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase school and district wide learning and performance.
“AVID is a wonderful program because it emphasizes and strengthens important characteristics and qualities that a successful student must master to navigate through college – such as determination, responsibility, and dedication. I enjoy seeing students blossom and grow in the program,” says Ms. Sanchez.
