What do authors need to be familiar with when they create a novel, and what is the process of a book going from the planning stage, into the published stage?

A 25 page short story surrounding the events of a squad of soldiers who find themselves stranded in enemy territory. The soldiers learn more about the nameless "enemy" that they fight, and they start to question their reasons to kill.
